If you’re one of the 1.44 billion monthly active users on Facebook, then go read something else, this blog isn’t for you.

However, if you live in the USA, Canada, Peru or Venezuela and you don’t currently have a Facebook account, read on.

In an interesting turn of events, Facebook yesterday announced that you no longer need a Facebook account to sign up to Messenger.

In a cunning move to gain more users, Facebook has made all the features of their instant messaging app available to people who don’t currently have an active Facebook account.

The move is intended to appeal to people who don’t want a Facebook account, but who might benefit from the Messenger app.

In an official blog post Facebook said “With this update, more people can enjoy all the features that are available on Messenger – including photos, videos, group chats, voice and video calling, stickers and more. All you need is a phone number.”

You have the option to add a name and a photo as well.
